Welcome to Duma Key in Florida where amazing talents await you if you yourself are ‘damaged’, as Edgar Freemantle find out for himself after an accident which took his right arm and destroyed his marriage.
Renting a house on Duma Key, Edgar finds time to indulge the artistic talent he never knew he had. The only problem is, what he paints comes true. At first he finds this a gift but then it becomes apparent that his disturbing ‘Girl and Ship’ series holds a power that threatens to destroy those around him he loves.
Duma Key, a beautiful stretch of unspoilt land leading into the Gulf of Mexico hides a deadly secret, a secret only known to Elizabeth Eastlake, who is tottering on the edge of Alzheimer’s. When Elizabeth is lucid her warnings are cryptic at best ~ what does she mean when she says ‘the table is leaking’, why does she put china figures into a cookie tin to be thrown into the gold fish pond, what really happened to her twin siblings who apparently drowned as infants, and who is Perse?
Jerome Wireman, Elizabeth’s live in helper, befriends Edgar and the more time they spend together delving into the past and the more Edgar paints, the pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place. But time is running out, the table is leaking and Perse is getting stronger.
Definitely the best piece of work released by Stephen King for a number of years now. Back to his familiar story telling style, which although was slow at first built up into a nice climax. I thought the friendship depicted between Edgar and Wireman was a little odd, some of the banter did not work for me, but on the whole it was hugely enjoyable for the genre.
