Empire of the Sun - J G Ballard

Raw and powerful novel of Jim Graham, interned in Shanghai and his desperate search to survive and find his parents.  Unfortunately this was filmed by Steven Spielberg, who managed to turn it into a flag waver for the Americans.

However, I loved the book.

  1. Hahaha, 'flag waver'.. I'll try and read this sometime soon -- only ever read Crash before.. so this should be a decent introduction to JG.

Even in Crash though, you can tell his has a lot of talent as a writer.. Prose is that powerful, it can make you feel all twisted and smashed up inside.. Just like a car crash

  2. I haven't read Crash, but wasn't it made into a movie? I must read it. I'm not sure how much of Empire of The Sun was based on Ballard's own experiences, but you really care for the boy, and it's quite alarming how he becomes conditioned to his prison home towards the end. It had quite an effect on me to the point I was dreaming about it.
