In 1959 in the quiet unassuming farming town of Holcomb, Kansas, a family of four is murdered in cold blood. There are no witnesses to this terrible event and the town fears that it could be one of their own.
Truman Capote delves into the lives and personalities of the community, giving us their memories of the Clutter family, their hopes and aspirations. He takes us through the discovery of the crime, the long investigation and subsequent resolution in great detail, as well as presenting us with a human face to the two monsters.
We should we know right from wrong no matter what life deals us, but the most callous of the two men Perry Smith, described as a child-like man, softly spoken, chillingly told Capote "I didn't want to harm the man. I thought he was a very nice gentleman. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throat”.
This book will haunt you right up until the conclusion.
